What does it mean?
Being a skillful web or library database searcher is more than just typing in your question in the search box. It involves making predictions and finding clues in your search results and critical thinking skills that help you refine your approach when you are not finding what you need.
Quick Steps

  1. Identify
Ask this:  What are the keywords and phrases in your question?
Do this: Focus on the essential concepts in your question. Make a list of words and synonyms you might use.

  2. Predict
Ask this:  Who would write a web page about the information you need and what information might be found on the page?
Do this:  When planning a search, make predictions about what you might find. In other words, add these words to your list of keywords.

  3. Search
Ask this:  What databases and resources are available that will fit my need?
Do this: Choose the database or search engine that meets your information needs. Decide which keyword you will begin your search with.

  4. Refine
Ask this:  How can you improve your results? Limit your search using advanced search strategies. Could you add or remove keywords to improve your results?
Do this: Continue searching and dig deeper.

  5. Reflect
Ask this: Did your results answer your question? What other information do you need?
Do this:  If you have not answered your question, refine your search and start again.

    Happy Searching!
